I was invited by the Toronto Fall Home Show to participate in a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity Toronto.

My task was to go to any Habitat for Humanity Toronto ReStore, purchase a piece for under $100 and “upcycle” it; give it a new live. For fun, they also made it into a competition between the participants.

You can vote for your favourite “upcycle” by clicking on the link at the bottom of the post or in person at the Toronto Fall Home Show. ALSO… they are auctioning off the finished pieces to raise money! So, why not take a minute to vote for your favourite “upcycle” item and if there is something that you LOVE then place bid on it!

Its a great way to add a unique piece to your home and contribute back to the community.

Here is my project, details on what I did and the before and after pictures!

I went to my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore and bought this side table for $20!!
I took the doors off, filled in the screw holes and sanded them down, so it would have an even, clean finish.
See the holes filled in? It’s super easy to do!
To sand off the many layers of stain and varnish, I used this amazing sander made by Black & Decker. In the past, I have only done things like this by hand. This tool was UNBELIEVABLE! I highly recommend using one if you have any similar projects.
Sanding the top
You have to sand every little nook and cranny.

Action shot!
Okay, ready to prime and paint!
I also used an incredibly handy Black & Decker paint sprayer to do the primer and paint finish.
This was so fast to do!
Okay, all primed. Once it completely dried, I put on 2 coats of paint , again using the paint  sprayer…..
Ta da!!! I made it into a side table/ pet bed! The generous people at Tonic Living donated the super cute pillow for a doggie or kitty to curl up on.
Here is the before and after side by side. Cute right? I was really happy with it.

Trust me. If I can do it, you could do it. But, before you rush out to start your project visit the eBay auction site to bid on a project that you would like to make your own. Maybe even a cute bed for the fury member of your family… wink, wink. 😉

* FYI, I don’t work for Black & Decker. But, these tools were so amazing that I couldn’t help but rave about them!:-)
